The words you hear at a 120s table

A 120s table has its own words, like the kitty, the big three, renege and 30 for 60. Here is what each one means, in plain language.

The kitty

The 3 cards dealt face down in the middle. The winning bidder picks them up and throws away 3 cards.

The suit the winning bidder names. Any trump beats any card that is not a trump.

The 5 of trumps, the Jack of trumps and the Ace of hearts, the three best cards in a hand. Each one adds 5 points to the trick it lands in.

Always a trump, whatever suit is picked. It is the third best card.

Outside of trump, a bigger number wins in hearts and diamonds and a smaller number wins in clubs and spades.

A bid of 20, 25 or 30 is a promise of that many points. Pass and you sit out the bidding for that hand.

When everyone passes, the dealer has to bid.

Bid 30 and make it and you score 60. Miss it and you lose 30.

A score below zero, usually from missing a bid.

Keeping a big three card back when a lower trump is led. It is allowed for the big three only.

Leading a trump. On a bid of 30, an opponent who leads the first card must lead a trump if they have one.

Reaching 120 and winning the game. Once your side has 100 or more, you usually have to make your own bid to go out.
